Shrapnel, Brides, and Boudoir | Knoxville Boudoir Photographer

Shrapnel, Brides, and Boudoir | Knoxville Boudoir Photographer

I’ve always been an early bloomer.

Not in the “my boobs grew before everyone else’s” sense, more in just the life sense. I got married before all of my friends were even in serious relationships, I had a big girl job for years then quit said big girl job to work for myself. Stuff like that. While I’m grateful for all of that, years go by before I get to share my knowledge, and truth be told it probably fades. As a for instance, I know nothing about dating. Like nothing. I “dated” before Jesse but I was like 15 so can you really even call that dating? I’m not even sure I know how to flirt. Thankfully, I do have a pretty good grasp of weddings, so now that my friends and family are getting engaged and planning weddings, I FINALLY get to be back on that side of things.

A few weeks ago, I went dress shopping with my friend, Kristen. I’m 100% a people watcher, which in turn is probably why I’m a photographer, so sitting back in the dressing area and getting to watch people come out and show off their dream dresses to their family and friends is premium entertainment. I just realized how creepy that all sounded…. I mean after they’re dressed.

As Kristen went back behind the curtain to try another dress on, I watched another girl come out to show hers off. She had her mom, her mother in law, and what I guessed was an aunt all waiting with bated breath. This was it, this was THE dress. They could see it, she could see it, even I could see it. It was made for her. As she stepped onto the platform, a right of passage, and did a spin, all eyes were on her. Her mom stood up to adjust the train, primping and fluffing as she went, and then she said it -

“Its beautiful, but you’ll need to skip a few meals to make sure your hips don’t bust these seams…thats where you gain you know.”

And I watched the joy drop right off her daughter’s face. Something else replaced it, maybe agreement or acceptance. And while she did smile again, it just wasn’t the same. The damage was done. That word shrapnel had already pierced.

Mamas, what if we told our daughters all of the good things about them? What if instead of projecting our own insecurities, we reassured. If instead of spewing venom we flooded the room with kindness? What if we didn’t comment on our daughter’s figures but instead complimented their minds? My first thought when I heard her say that was how I wished I could turn back time, walk over to mom, and shake her real hard. But the truth is, mom says things like that because she herself has heard things like that. Its a vicious cycle and we have to make a conscious decision to end it. We have to raise up daughters to believe that the least interesting thing about themselves is their pant size. We HAVE to, or this won’t ever stop.

When you come into my home, into my studio, we don’t hate on ourselves. We laugh, we joke, we EAT, we drink. and maybe sometimes we cry. We work at undoing all that damage that the world has done to you, and we celebrate our victories. I’ve been shooting boudoir for a long time now, and the one thing I can consistently say is true is that you WILL leave better than when you arrived. You’ll see yourself in a new light, a fresh light. And I’ll be cheering you on all the way.

Knoxville Boudoir Photography Studio

Knoxville Boudoir Studio

What a freakin title.
Well ladies, I’ve done it. I’ve jumped off the deep end. Okay, its not that dramatic, but I did create a studio in my house!!!
I know, you’re shook, right? Right? Okay, but it IS cool though.

Having an in home boudoir studio is something I’ve contemplated for years, but I always assumed I’d need to wait until we moved someday and would buy a house with that in mind. Never in a million years did I think this would be a possibility in our current home, but look at me counting my lucky stars.

She’s a work in progress, and she forces me to keep my house clean-ish all the time, BUT SHES MINE. She being the studio, of course. Most of you have seen the progress on insta, but I wanted to officially introduce the space on the blog since I had my first session in it today!!

You’re probably wondering what this means for you and for Winx.
If you’re a guy, literally nothing, but if you’re a lady, be excited, be really excited! It means a more luxe experience, better deals, more frequent work being show, giveaways, and a constantly evolving and well curated exclusive space.

Intersted? Send me a message! Lets talk shop!

And lastly, two shots from earlier today!

Boudoir Minis and Why They're Awesome | Knoxville Boudoir Photographer

Boudoir Minis and Why They're Awesome | Knoxville Boudoir Photographer

*** Please note this post is from my last round of boudoir minis in Jan of 2019. I currently only offer full sessions. Click here to book one. ***

Extra extra, read all about it- Boudoir Minis are BACK.

Every year, sometimes twice, I get to hold a round of boudoir minis. These sessions are so near and dear to my heart because I inevitably bond with these incredibly strong, brave, kind, funny women and together we get to create some of the most beautiful portraits of them. I have brides and moms and grandmas and best friends and wives and single ladies all participate and they all have something in common- they’re all gorgeous. Everybody means every body. SO, if you’re on the fence, I thought I’d put together a few reasons why I LOVE these sessions.

  1. It lets you dip your toe into the world of boudoir without grabbing a full session. I have TONS of women come back later on for a full sesh, after they see that, hey, this self love thing isn’t as scary as it may seem.

  2. Its a perfect confidence booster disguised as a gift. Yes, you can give your session to your significant other and they’ll love it, but whats more important is that YOU will love it.

  3. They’re tasteful. I’ve had MOMS thank me for creating such beautiful and timeless portraits of their daughters. Yup, you read that right, you could even show your mom. These photos are the epitome of tasteful. My work is more suggestive than anything. I always grab gorgeous classic photos of you in the process.

  4. Discount. Seriously, need I say more?

Why I'm bringing boudoir BACK to Winx.

Why I'm bringing boudoir BACK to Winx.

I'm nothing if not real, and in an attempt to share my realness with you, I want to make sure I share my shortcomings.

Heres the thing about business, there is no one right way to do it for everyone. We learn as we grow, situations mould our ideas, and plans change. Boudoir has been my passion for a long time, and a few months back, I got this idea to move my boudoir work into its own entity, enter Alexandra Quinn Photo. My hope in doing this was that A. I wouldn't offend the fine folks who don't wanna see a booty pic when searching out their wedding or portrait photography and B. I would be MUCH more organized.

WELP. I'm here to tell you, I am in no way, shape, or form any more organized than I ever was. I also could've alleviated the booty pic problems by, oh I don't know, making a seperate insta for my boudoir work? Something super creative, like @winxphotoboudoir probably would've done the trick. Also, upon creating a beautiful site and setting up all the social media platforms, I learned that I share a name with.....drumroll please.... a porn star. Yep. You read it here first. SO, for anyone just typing in something innocent like "Alexandra Quinn Boudoir" google would pull something that...well... is kindof boudoir?
Whatever. I digress.

Aside from all of that, one of the most visited posts on this site is my post about being a Knoxville Boudoir Photographer. It also polls pretty high SEO wise when googling, higher in fact than my dedicated boudoir website.

With that being said, I'll be transitioning boudoir work BACK to Winx Photo in June. I guess theres nothing I love more than revamping my site (if you visit frequently, you'll probably notice that I quite literally change SOMETHING every single week) so I'm up for the challenge.

As for a studio space, thats still on the horizon, but in the midst of wedding season it just isn't as pressing. I am, however, officially a preferred photographer at The Hive in Knoxville, meaning I have access to that beautiful space without any additional fees for you. While I can use it for anything, it definitely suits boudoir well.

To kick off this reintroduction, I thought I'd share some recent boudoir work with you from our last minis. Heres Kristen at the Honeybee Loft, lookin' fine.

Just kidding about that part.
I'm alright though.

Knoxville Boudoir Photographer | Self Love

Knoxville Boudoir Photographer | Self Love

This is the SINGLE most viewed post or page on our site. I am honored/thrilled/speechless at the 1000's of you who have taken the time to read this and my prayer is that it has really sunk in. If you're interested in having me, Quinn, help you celebrate your body by shooting a boudoir session for you, please drop me a line here and i'll be in touch!

"I hate the way I look in photos, but I really want to do a session like this for my husband."
Stop. Stop right there. I've heard a variance of that line probably 60+ times. I am not joking, I am not over exaggerating.
Ladies, this post is about to get real.

I need to hit a nerve with you, yes, you reading this, because I NEED this to sink in.
You are beautiful. You are valuable. You are worth showing up for.

When I was around 12, we had a group come and speak to my school about risky behaviors I think. I honestly don't remember what the initial topic was, but I remember that they split us up, boys with boys and girls with girls, and had a little breakout session. The man who talked to us ended our session with 3 of the most profound and powerful words I have ever had spoken to me, over me, about me: "You are valuable."
I'm not entirely sure why that sunk in so much, because it wasn't like I had had a shitty life or didn't know I was valuable, but for some reason it did. I've carried that with me for years, thinking back on it when I've felt like I needed a jolt. Imagine if this guy knew what an impact he had had. Imagine if he understood that what he said to a room full of 12 year old girls so many years ago would help mold me into who I am and what I stand for. Imagine if this man could see that those very words inspire my business the most.
I have to believe that if he knew that, he'd never stop saying them. Maybe he hasn't. Maybe he knows what a difference it can make to affirm someone's value. I do, and thats why I shoot boudoir.

Your value is not in your pant size; it is not in the number on the scale. Your value doesn't fluctuate depending on if you've laid in the tanning bed this month or if your skin is particularly ashy today. Your value does not decrease when you're bloated, nor does it increase when you camouflage your flaws with makeup. Your value is not a variable.

When you walk into my studio, into whatever space we're shooting in, you have to understand one thing: we are both human. We both have bodies we love to hate and we both have flaws we'd rather not showcase. This is where we have to change the narrative.

No, I will not photoshop you into something you're not. No, I will not obsess over hiding your body behind things. No, I will not stop joking around with you because you hate your smile. No, I won't be that photographer who only shows up for the check.

Yes, I will embrace you exactly as you are. Yes, I will showcase your best assets, and help you believe that you are absolutely beautiful. Yes, I will tell insanely cheesy jokes and laugh with you at myself when I try to demonstrate a pose. Yes, I will be your #1 fan.

In front of my camera, I need you to practice self love. I need you to believe that maybe just maybe, you're perfect the way you are.
